a toolkit for working with young women
A unique feature of this programme was the active involvement of young women from initial concept, to content, to programme design through pilots, evaluation and final production. Independently funded the process was led by young women at all stages and stayed true to their vision of the programmes at all times.

Programme Outcomes

The programme is facilitated over 8 weekly sessions, and each session is 1 hour long.

By the end of the programme young women will be able to: 

  • Understand the concept of identity and recognise the many influences and mixed messages that are impacting on young women’s identity.
  • Understand self-esteem, identify what impacts on their own self-esteem, develop strategies to cultivate and nurture their self-esteem and identity.
  • Analyse and describe how attitudes, societal beliefs and use of language can impact on women’s identity.
  • Recognise how women are portrayed in the media and explore how this can influence women’s identity.
  • Acknowledge and understand their self-beliefs. Develop authentic, healthy self- beliefs.
  • Name their core values and explain the connection between values and identity.Explore how to live their values.
  • Recognise values in relationships and identify how a healthy/unhealthy relationship can impact on self-esteem and identity.
  • Understand the different support services available to young women and how to access relevant information.

Training Description

This training programme is aimed at experienced facilitatorsworking with young women ages 16 – 18 in a youth work, out of school or education setting.  

The training takes an experiential approach and aims to provide an opportunity for those intending to deliver the programme to experience a number of the exercise and explore their own values and attitudes.

On completion of this 1 day training participants will be able to:

  • Have a sufficient familiarity with the content of the programme to be in a position to deliver the programme to young women.
  • Understand the aims of The Youth Identity Programme.
  • Understand outcomes of the programme and how they link with National Youth Strategy.  

This is an interactive training, where participants get the opportunity to experience and discuss the programme.  The training is informative and allows participants the opportunity to ask questions specificto their target groups of young women.
